Rwanda

Mist, volcanoes and the mountain gorilla

Rwanda surprises almost everyone.

Hill after hill after hill, intensely green, the Virunga volcanoes rising in the north above bamboo and mist. The country is small, ordered and forward-looking in a way that feels genuinely different from anywhere else on the continent.

The gorillas of Volcanoes National Park are the reason most people come — and the experience exceeds what most people imagine. To trek through the bamboo and find a family in a clearing — the silverback watchful a few metres away, a mother nursing her infant, juveniles tumbling nearby — is humbling. Sitting in that clearing, with a ranger who has known this family for years and speaks of them the way you would speak of neighbours, that proximity becomes very real.

  • Trek through bamboo forest to meet a mountain gorilla family
  • Visit the golden monkeys of the Virunga volcanic highlands
  • Explore Volcanoes National Park with rangers who have known these families for years
  • Walk the intensely green thousand hills of the Rwandan countryside
